![]() ![]() Using a Beyerdynamic 1990 Pro headphone, a JDS Labs El AMP II and Atom headphone amp, I listened pretty extensively to Amazon Music HD, Qobuz (with its own player and through Audirvana) and Tidal HiFi / Audirvana. After listening for a longer period of time, Qobuz is clearly better at conveying detail, transparency/clarity, pace and presence, but Spotify doesn't do anything noticeably wrong. I can listen to Spotify especially in mobile settings and be engaged and immersed in the music. Any shortcomings that it has are errors of omission rather than errors of commission. These were my listening notes for Spotify Premium vs Qobuz:įrom a critical listening perspective in my auditioning sessions, Spotify actually is not bad at conveying detail, pace and presence from music. Qobuz does provide better sound quality, but listening via Spotify is more than decent. Spotify doesn't try to push the sound quality envelope and succeeds in providing a consistently musical sound. ![]() I can hear that Tidal and Amazon HD are trying to provide "more" in terms of sound quality, but in doing so, the sonic results are frequently not pleasing to my ears. To my ears, both Tidal and Amazon HD commit errors of commission in their music reproduction, while Spotify has more sonically benign errors of omission. Qobuz is my main streaming service, but I also have a Spotify Premium Family account. My listening impressions are that Spotify Premium sounds better than Amazon HD and Tidal. Another 23 converted with at least 94% conversion, and another 29 with at least 85% conversion. This is going to sound like heresy, but I suggest that those of you that are considering better usability than Qobuz or Tidal try Spotify Premium. On the playlists, it converted 81% of all tracks across all playlists. First Two Seven Inches by Minor Threat - no Minor Threat at all on qobuz. There's no Funkadelic to speak of on qobuz. The worst ones that I couldn't find, the ones that really got to me, were: (actually, that album IS on qobuz!! that's a big win, i've missed that album) A few of them actually aren't on spotify either - there are albums like Jaco Pastorius's debut album, which you can find on Spotify but when you look at it, there's no tracks available. Of those, most were really not that big of a deal. However I was able to find 19 of those manually leaving 52 that are not on qobuz (93% hit rate). Of the 815 albums I have favorited on Spotify, 71 of those were not found with the automatic import (91% hit rate). I used a tool to automate importing my playlists, favorited albums, etc from Spotify to qobuz. Essentially, as far as I can tell, switching to any other streaming service is going to come with a drop in UX. But I've been comparing it to Amazon as well, and while amazon is snappier than qobuz, they are both kinda crap. The UI/UX of qobuz isn't as good as spotify's. I'm testing on a good rig at 24bit/192kHz for the qobuz, against Spotify's highest settings. My foray into A/B testing shows that qobuz is the clear winner, but more testing is needed.
